all that glitters

landscapes on gold leaf

  • Below is a small gallery of my more recent work on gold leaf.

Working with gold leaf is something I had wanted to do for years
but never took the first step until the summer of COVID in 2020.

Because I was not teaching in the studio, I had time and space.
I decided it was time to risk jumping into something I knew nothing about.

This became a form of jazz painting for me.
An improvisation with media that I knew:
Chinese ink and watercolors, particularly stone blue and stone green.
But on a surface that I didn’t know—imitation gold leaf.

I quickly became smitten with the way I could play with semi-transparent
pigments, opaque pigments and watch them behave in unexpected ways.
Some became permanent on the gilded surface, others remained workable.
